    Modelling Clock Synchronization in the Chess gMAC WSN Protocol

    We present a detailled timed automata model of the clock synchronization algorithm that is currently being used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) that has been developed by the Dutch company Chess. Using the Uppaal model checker, we establish that in certain cases a static, fully synchronized network may eventually become unsynchronized if the current algorithm is used, even in a setting with infinitesimal clock drifts

    Genome-wide association study identifies the SERPINB gene cluster as a susceptibility locus for food allergy

    Genetic factors and mechanisms underlying food allergy are largely unknown. Due to heterogeneity of symptoms a reliable diagnosis is often difficult to make. Here, we report a genome-wide association study on food allergy diagnosed by oral food challenge in 497 cases and 2387 controls. We identify five loci at genome-wide significance, the clade B serpin (SERPINB) gene cluster at 18q21.3, the cytokine gene cluster at 5q31.1, the filaggrin gene, the C11orf30/LRRC32 locus, and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region. Stratifying the results for the causative food demonstrates that association of the HLA locus is peanut allergy-specific whereas the other four loci increase the risk for any food allergy. Variants in the SERPINB gene cluster are associated with SERPINB10 expression in leukocytes. Moreover, SERPINB genes are highly expressed in the esophagus. All identified loci are involved in immunological regulation or epithelial barrier function, emphasizing the role of both mechanisms in food allergy

    Two-dimensional ferromagnetic extension of a topological insulator

    Inducing a magnetic gap at the Dirac point of the topological surface state (TSS) in a 3D topological insulator (TI) is a route to dissipationless charge and spin currents. Ideally, magnetic order is present only at the surface and not in the bulk, e.g. through proximity of a ferromagnetic (FM) layer. However, such a proximity-induced Dirac mass gap has not been observed, likely due to insufficient overlap of TSS and the FM subsystem. Here, we take a different approach, namely FM extension, using a thin film of the 3D TI Bi2_2Te3_3, interfaced with a monolayer of the lattice-matched van der Waals ferromagnet MnBi2_2Te4_4. Robust 2D ferromagnetism with out-of-plane anisotropy and a critical temperature of Tc≈\text{T}_\text{c}\approx~15 K is demonstrated by X-ray magnetic dichroism and electrical transport measurements. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe the opening of a sizable magnetic gap in the 2D FM phase, while the surface remains gapless in the paramagnetic phase above Tc_c. This sizable gap indicates a relocation of the TSS to the FM ordered Mn moments near the surface, which leads to a large mutual overlap.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    VGI in Education: From K-12 to Graduate Studies

    Abstract. Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) is making its way into an increasing number of fields within geographic information science. This development has raised a need to cover VGI at various educational levels, which has led to a number of new classes on VGI ranging from elementary through secondary school to undergraduate and graduate university curricula. In this paper, we give an overview of the state of the art of VGI in education at these different levels. We outline different ways of introducing VGI in class. Specifically, we have investigated the long-term effects of using VGI in education to find out whether students who have come across VGI in class remain interested in the topic and engage in the communities. For this purpose, we have created a survey that was circulated among students of past VGI classes at different levels. The evaluation of the 202 completed surveys gives an overview of motivations and impediments with respect to different VGI platforms. We conclude with recommendations for the future development of curricula covering Volunteered Geographic Information

    Near-infrared photoluminescence enhancement in Ge/CdS and Ge/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals: Utilizing IV/II-VI semiconductor epitaxy

    Ge nanocrystals have a large Bohr radius and a small, size-tunable band gap that may engender direct character via strain or doping. Colloidal Ge nanocrystals are particularly interesting in the development of near-infrared materials for applications in bioimaging, telecommunications and energy conversion. Epitaxial growth of a passivating shell is a common strategy employed in the synthesis of highly luminescent II-VI, III-V and IV-VI semiconductor quantum dots. Here, we use relatively unexplored IV/II-VI epitaxy as a way to enhance the photoluminescence and improve the optical stability of colloidal Ge nanocrystals. Selected on the basis of their relatively small lattice mismatch compared with crystalline Ge, we explore the growth of epitaxial CdS and ZnS shells using the successive ion layer adsorption and reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques, including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction, clearly show the controllable growth of as many as 20 epitaxial monolayers of CdS atop Ge cores. In contrast, Ge etching and/or replacement by ZnS result in relatively small Ge/ZnS nanocrystals. The presence of an epitaxial II-VI shell greatly enhances the near-infrared photoluminescence and improves the photoluminescence stability of Ge. Ge/II-VI nanocrystals are reproducibly 1-3 orders of magnitude brighter than the brightest Ge cores. Ge/4.9CdS core/shells show the highest photoluminescence quantum yield and longest radiative recombination lifetime. Thiol ligand exchange easily results in near-infrared active, water-soluble Ge/II-VI nanocrystals. We expect this synthetic IV/II-VI epitaxial approach will lead to further studies into the optoelectronic behavior and practical applications of Si and Ge-based nanomaterials
